One of the earliest examples of a music video was St Louis Blue’s – Bessie Smith, it came out in 1925, it starred blues singer Bessie Smith. It was a short film, it featured a dramatized version of his song.
In 1940 Disney released a film called 'Fantasia', this was iconic for music videos, because the whole film was based around classical music. The music used was fairly famous at the time.
I have chosen Brief 1, which is the music video, I chose this because I believe that I would be able to produce a good finishing product, as it is an are I am very familiar with. By choosing this brief I believe that I would produce a high quality product compared to if I chose a different brief. What attracted me to this brief is the fact that music videos tend to be very diverse, therefore I will hopefully have a lot of freedom to create a diverse product.
Vladimir Propp studied Russian fairytales and is where he discovered that in every story; there are 8 main character types present. According to Propp, these character types helps offer stories a structure for text.
The Hero - the lead character
The Villain - an individual who is against the hero
The Donor - Prepares the hero by providing them with tools to aid their quest.
The Dispatcher - Who sends the hero on their quest.
The False Hero - Someone who claims the hero’s success.
The Helper - Who aids the hero on their quest.
The Princess/prize - an individual/item that acts as a reward for the hero’s accomplishments.
Her Father - An individual who rewards the hero for their effort.
Within this theory comes certain conventions that must occur with these character:
Hero’s are branded
Good overcomes evil
There is a form of struggle between two relations.
For the first brief we are asked to produce a promotional package for an album realise, which will include a music video and digipack. I think this suits my skill set because i'm experienced in using software such as Photoshop ad Premiere, which I believe will be very useful if I choose this brief. Also I like this brief because i'm into music, and I like art.
I think this brief will allow you to be creative and explore a wide variety of music videos and different forms of art. Examples of Videos
I personally like the the visuals of each video because they are very interesting and unique.
From looking at a variety of videos, I think that making a music video would be a very creative opportunity because I would be able to explore with a variety of shots and effects.
Brief 3
For the second brief we have to make a television advert, as well as this we have to make a radio advert. For this I think there is a lot of freedom, due to the fact you can pick any product, this means that you have a lot of diversity with the end product which will be produced.
Brief 10
For the third brief we are asked to create a short film, I like the idea of this because we have freedom of the direction of the story. We can choose the genre unlike our AS project, and we get to work alone so that the short will be mostly your personal ideas.
Examples
I think a good short, has to be very artistic and it has to grab the audiences attention straight away. A short film should have an engaging opening, I believe it has to have a very intriguing story which grips the audience.
